Nutrition and Exercise, May 21

Join nutritionist and personal trainer Scott Laifer for a Question and Answer session about nutrition and exercise, and how they go together. Exercise is good for you...unless you do it improperly. Then it can cause hours of pain, discomfort, and often permanent damage.

Join Hunterdon County Medical Center's Exercise Physiologist Joanne Ferrise as she reviews how you can exercise safely and properly to gain the maximum benefit of your workout. Wear comfortable clothes and footwear. Time will be allotted for a Q&A period.

Book Discussion: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, by Lisa See, May 10

Please join librarian Chris Murray for an intriguing discussion of this sensitive book, which chronicles the lives of two Chinese girls from childhood through maturity, as they attempt to weave their way through the turbulent culture clashes of nineteenth-century China. Over the years they send secret messages to each other by writing on a silk fan, recording important events in their lives. A misunderstanding causes the women to stop writing, but they reconcile as Snow Flower's death approaches.

Everyday Tips on How We Can Protect Our Environment, May 8

Now that you've become aware of the problems with global warming, come learn what YOU can do to help protect the environment and community that you live in. Figure out how to reduce your energy consumption, and reuse and recycle things you didn't consider before.

Our speaker, Thuy Anh Le, is an Environmental Steward with the Rutgers Cooperative Extension, a unit of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station at Cook College. A resident of Hillsborough, Thuy Anh would like to share the information she has with other members of the community. She will present a slide show with Q&A afterwards.

How to Landscape Your Home Like a Professional, May 1

Delaware and Raritan Canal Slide-Talk, April 28

Adults and children alike will enjoy author Linda Barth's slide talk about this famous waterway, one of the most successful towpath canals in the United States. How did the canal operate? Who lived along the canal? What vessels cruised this waterway?

For nearly 170 years, the Delaware and Raritan Canal has meandered across the narrow waist of New Jersey. One of the most famous towpath canals in the United States, the D&R carried more tonnage than the famous Erie Canal. Today, as the centerpiece of the Delaware and Raritan State Park, the canal provides the people of central New Jersey with both a water supply and a premier recreational facility.

Hillsborough Library Celebrates National Garden Month!

The Somerset County Parks Commission will be stationed at the library entrance between 3:00 and 6:30 PM to provide information on visiting the beautiful parks of Somerset County, as well as the activities they offer.

The Master Gardeners of Somerset/Hunterdon Counties, a part of the NJ Master Gardeners Program who are trained volunteers assisting Rutgers Cooperative Extension in its mission to deliver horticulture programs and information to the public, will host a table between 2:00 and 5:00 PM to answer any of your gardening questions.
